Genetic Carrier Screening

Genetic carrier screening can help determine whether you may be at increased risk of having a child with a serious genetic condition. Many people are unaware that they are carriers of a genetic disorder until the birth of an affected child. Testing is now available- prior to, or early in pregnancy- to clarify your risk and consider your reproductive options.

There are various tests available for carrier screening, ranging in price and coverage. The genetic counsellors at The Genetic Clinic can advise you on the best option for your situation.

Prenatal Counselling

Routine pregnancy tests, like non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), can sometimes yield unexpected results, causing anxiety and confusion. If you need to discuss your test results in detail, we are here to help. Our team provides prompt consultations to help you understand your results and guide you through further testing options like chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis.
Our prenatal counselling services aim to give you clarity and peace of mind during this critical time. We offer comprehensive support, ensuring you are fully informed about your options and prepared for any potential outcomes throughout your pregnancy journey.

Cancer Family History Assessment

While cancer often appears to occur “out of the blue”, about 5% of cases are due to inherited genetic faults. Genetic testing may be suitable for families with:

  • A higher than expected incidence of cancers
  • An earlier age of onset of cancers than expected
  • The same type of cancers occurring in many family members

If you are concerned about your personal or family history of cancer, we can assess your risk and discuss the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of genetic testing. Our experts provide thorough consultations to help you understand your risk and decide on the best course of action for you and your family.

Family History

If a relative has been diagnosed with a genetic condition, we can help you understand the implications for your own health. Testing may be available to clarify your risk of having inherited the condition or passing it on to your children. Predictive genetic testing involves testing healthy individuals to determine their likelihood of developing a particular condition in the future. If there is a known gene fault in your family, predictive genetic testing may be available. We see people at risk of conditions like Huntington’s disease, familial cardiomyopathy and motor neuron disease for predictive testing.

Due to the significant implications of predictive genetic testing, the process at The Genetic Clinic involves multiple visits. We adhere to the predictive genetic testing guidelines of the Human Genetic Society of Australasia to ensure the highest standard of care and support.
